June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a time to support and celebrate our LGBTQ+ communities while reaffirming our commitment to health equity for all. Recognizing these communities’ mental health needs, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is committed to providing resources and support for LGBTQ+ people and their allies.
Here are some ways you can show your support during Pride Month and beyond:
- Educate yourself and others: Take the time to educate yourself and others about LGBTQ+ mental health challenges, as well as the role of LGBTQ+ activists in the evolution of mental health and substance use care, especially harm reduction. Attend workshops, webinars or training sessions to learn about the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people and how you can provide support as a Mental Health First Aider. Watch a replay of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing’s webinar on supporting LGBTQ+ communities.
- Be an ally: If you don’t identify as LGBTQ+, show your support for these communities by being an ally. Use gender-inclusive language, challenge discrimination and prejudice when you see it, and create a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ people in your workplace and community.
- Support LGBTQ-owned businesses: Support LGBTQ-owned businesses by purchasing from them, and encourage others to do so by promoting local directories or maps featuring these businesses. Consider organizing a shopping or dining event focused on supporting them.
- Explore Social media resources: Consider following LGBTQ+ mental health accounts on social media to stay informed and show your support. Accounts like The Trevor Project, GLAAD provide valuable resources, support and advocacy.
- #BeTheDifference: Consider getting trained in MHFA to learn how to support individuals facing a mental health or substance use challenge and take care of your own mental wellbeing. Visit MHFA.org to find a course near you or bring MHFA training to your workplace.
